Hello! Today we are going to introduce to you a substance known as oxytocin!

An Introduction to Oxytocin

Oxytocin is a nine amino acids peptide. Like other many hormones, it is produced in the brain and released by the pituitary gland. Oxytocin is produced naturally in both
females’ and males’ bodies where it plays an important role in reproduction and a special kind of feeling we all know it as “love”.

Oxytocin acts on certain smooth muscles:

(a) hastens birth
(b) stimulates contractions of the uterus during the period of birth giving;
(c) stimulates release of milk when the baby starts to feed on the mother’s milk.

Oxytocin also acts as a neurotransmitter, meaning to relay, amplify and modulate electrical signals between a neuron and another cell, in the brain where it helps to enhance:

(d) the bonding between opposite sexes after they have mated;
(e) the bonding between a mother and her newborn child ;
(f) the level of one's trust in other people.
